What is a GP file?
A GP file is a score saved by the tab-editing program Guitar Pro. It holds the guitar TAB, standard notation, rhythm and tempo, so it can play back what is written. Huge numbers of guitar, bass and drum tabs online are shared as GP files (.gp, .gp5, .gpx). You used to need the program to read them – now a browser is enough.
| Extension | Saved by |
|---|---|
| .gp | Guitar Pro 7, Guitar Pro 8 (GP8) |
| .gpx | Guitar Pro 6 |
| .gp5 | Guitar Pro 5 – the most common GP tabs online |
| .gp4, .gp3 | Guitar Pro 4, Guitar Pro 3 |
Your file is opened inside your own browser and is not uploaded to our server.
iPhone & Android
On a phone
- iPhone / iPad: save the GP file to the Files app first (from Mail or a chat app: Share → Save to Files), then open the TAB player, tap the orange folder and pick it.
- Android: downloaded files are usually in the Downloads folder – tap the orange folder and choose the file.
Features
What you can do
- Read the TAB – it scrolls with the playback and a cursor shows where you are.
- Play and slow down – practise slowly without changing the pitch.
- Loop a section – repeat a few bars until they are under your fingers.
- Multi-track scores – switch between guitar, bass, drums and other tracks.
- View only – this is a reading and practice player; to edit or save GP files you still need an editor such as Guitar Pro.
