Alternate tunings
Alternate tunings chart: Drop D, DADGAD, Open G…
Changing the pitch of a few strings gives a different sound. Strings are always listed from the 6th string to the 1st. Tune each string to the note shown, using the online guitar tuner.
| Tuning (6th → 1st string) | How to get there · what it is used for |
|---|---|
| Half-step down (Eb standard) Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb | All six strings down a half step. Used for: Easier string tension and a better fit for some singers’ ranges. Common in rock and blues. |
| Whole-step down (D standard) D G C F A D | All six strings down a whole step. Used for: A lower, heavier sound for rock and folk accompaniment. |
| Drop D D A D G B E | Only the 6th string down a whole step (E → D). Used for: Power chords with one finger; a thicker bass for fingerstyle pieces. |
| Double Drop D D A D G B D | 6th and 1st strings down a whole step. Used for: Folk and fingerstyle; the best fit for songs in D. |
| DADGAD D A D G A D | 6th, 2nd and 1st strings down a whole step. Used for: Celtic music and fingerstyle; the open strings alone give a hazy, suspended sound. |
| Open G D G D G B D | 6th, 5th and 1st strings down a whole step. Used for: Blues and slide guitar; strumming the open strings gives a G chord. |
| Open D D A D F# A D | 6th, 2nd and 1st strings down a whole step, 3rd string down a half step. Used for: Slide and fingerstyle; strumming the open strings gives a D chord. |
| Open C C G C G C E | 6th string down two whole steps, 5th and 4th down a whole step, 2nd string up a half step. Used for: Fingerstyle with a wide, deep bass. |
| Open E E B E G# B E | 5th and 4th strings up a whole step, 3rd string up a half step. Used for: Blues and slide. String tension goes up, so check your guitar before tuning up. |
- When lowering a string, turn the peg slowly while watching the tuner, a little at a time. Raise strings (for example in Open E) with extra care: turning too far can break a string.
- A new tuning changes the string tension. When you go back to standard tuning, check every string again.
- If you only want a song to sound higher, a capo does the job without changing the tuning.
